Maupassant once wrote “If one had to spend a single day in Sicily and asked: What should I visit? I’d surely answer: Taormina”.The promontory that dives in the Ionio Sea, the Greek-Roman Theatre, the colours and citrus fragrances complete the scenery.
The high part of the city is cut through by Corso Umberto I, a pedestrian area where you can focus on shopping, the lower part leads to the beach of the Isola Bella, accessible via cableway or by car, where beach resorts are. A real must is a visit to the Greek-Roman Theatre, name given because of the double use it had throughout history.
It was built by the Greeks when Naxos colony was funded and it was used to play tragedies. Later it was adapted by the Romans to host gladiators fights. The view of the promontory is breathtaking: the Gulf of Taormina, the Strait of Messina and Letojanni littoral.After the cultural trip it was time for a break at the “Bam Bar”, the best in Taormina to taste granita (slush) and brioche. I was skeptical about the union, until I spread the slush on the brioche. Never judge a book from its cover; it was absolutely amazing.
Maupassant scrisse “Se qualcuno dovesse passare un solo giorno in Sicilia e chiedesse: Cosa bisogna vedere? Risponderei senza esitazione: Taormina.”
Il promontorio che scende ripido sul mar Ionio, il teatro Greco-Romano, i colori e i profumi degli agrumi completano lo scenario.
La parte alta arroccata è attraversata dal Corso Umberto I, via pedonale dove ci si può concentrare sullo shopping, la parte bassa invece sul litorale accessibile con cabinovia o in auto fino all’Isola Bella contornata dagli stabilimenti balneari.
Tappa obbligatoria è la visita dell’Anfiteatro Greco-Romano che deve la sua denominazione alla duplice utilità che gli attribuirono nei secoli.
Edificato dai Greci, nel momento della fondazione della colonia di Naxos, i quali lo utilizzarono come scenario teatrale delle tragedie, fu poi ristrutturato dai Romani che lo adibirono ad arena nella quale combattevano i gladiatori. La vista dal promontorio dell’anfiteatro è mozzafiato: il golfo di Taormina, lo stretto di Messina fino alla Calabria e il lunghissimo litorale di Letojanni.
Dopo un po’ di cultura una breve pausa da “Bam Bar”.
E’ il migliore di tutta Taormina dove gustare granita e brioche.
Il connubio mi ha lasciata scettica fino al momento in cui ho “spalmato” la granita sulla mia brioche.
Mai giudicare dall’apparenza, l’accompagnamento è unico e strepitoso.
